[5:11]  1 tn The word “Hear” is supplied in the translation for clarification and for stylistic reasons.

[5:11]  2 tn The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain. Some translate “those who distribute the water” (HALOT 344 s.v. חצץ pi). For other options see B. Lindars, Judges 1-5, 246-47.

[5:11]  3 tn Or perhaps “repeat.”

[5:11]  4 tn See the note on the term “warriors” in v. 7.

[9:24]  5 tn Heb “their brother.”

[9:24]  6 tn Heb “so that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerub-Baal might come, and their blood might be placed on Abimelech, their brother, who murdered them, and upon the leaders of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to murder his brothers.”

[13:19]  7 tc Heb “Doing an extraordinary deed while Manoah and his wife were watching.” The subject of the participle is missing. The translation assumes that the phrase “the Lord’s messenger” was lost by homoioteleuton. If the text originally read לַיהוָה מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה (layhavah malakh yÿhvah), the scribe’s eye could have jumped from the first יְהוָה to the second, accidentally omitting two of the three words. Later the conjunction וּ (shureq) would have been added to the following מַפְלִא (mafli’) for syntactical reasons. Another possibility is that a pronominal subject (הוּא, hu’) has been lost in the MT due to haplography.

[20:8]  8 tn Heb “as one man.”

[20:8]  9 tn Heb “to his tent.”

[20:8]  10 tn Or “turn aside.”
